In her own words...

Hi I'm Siobhan, I sometimes smile when I'm nervous I'm well aware this isn't a laughing matter, like I said in the video I suffer from depression and anxiety. I  didn't go into any detail about them as I don't like to speak about myself and my day to day struggles its hard to put how I feel into words. With my depression and anxiety it started when I was a teenager and went through a very difficult and traumatic time which  I kept to myself until the day where I felt so low and alone that  I tried to commit suicide, looking back i was only 17 and struggling to cope with my emotions, it was more a cry for help as my head was all over the place.

I was also bullied throughout primary and secondary school. Which resulted with me having bad anxiety as I was bullied for my appearance. I still really struggle with walking past groups or gangs of people as I feel they are speaking about and laughing at me or i start to panic and think I might get attacked like I was when this all started. With my depression also I do try to only take my medication when I need extra help mentally and I only stay on my anti depressants for maybe two or three months for a little boost. I then come back off them as I don't like the idea of becoming addicted to them and having to be dependent on them for the rest of my life.

My GP is very supportive of the way I take the medication as he sees and understands what I mean with not wanting an addiction. My GP is really amazing, I cant thank him enough, he's been a shoulder to cry on (literally) for years and has helped me so much to get to where I am today.

But everyday is a real struggle to get up and out of bed in the morning. I'm so thankful I have my three gorgeous daughters to help me fight the darkness and hard times to get the get up and go in the mornings and to get me through the day.

I have also worked with SAMH before and they are a fantastic help and I would recommend them for help and support.

Siobhan's Story

Siobhan has been effected by depression and anxiety, how can we battle this...

Depression what you need to know

Depression varies very much from person to person and can happen for one or more reasons (loss, childhood experiences, anger, life events etc).  Occasionally it may appear for no obvious reason.

An important thing to accept is that there are usually no instant solutions to problems in life. Solving problems involves time, energy and work.  When you are feeling depressed, you may not be feeling energetic or motivated to work. But if you are able to take an active part in your treatment it should help your situation.
